"He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David." (Luke 1:32)

Samuel in overview

Samuel's father is named Elkanah. (1 Sam 1:12) Broken into two parts it is el-kanah, 'el' means God and 'Kanah' is used first in Gen 4:1. "Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, 'I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.'" The word 'gotten' in Eve's statement is the Hebrew word, 'kanah.' When 'el' is used with 'kanah' which means 'possessed' or 'gotten' it means 'God possessed' (possessed of God) or 'God gotten' (gotten from God) or 'God has gotten.' With that name, God, as the divine author calls to our mind the redemptive history for mankind and especially Israel. In the Garden it began with God's promise to Eve that a redeemer would come from her seed.

Elkanah (and thus Samuel to come) was not of the tribe of Ephraim by blood but a Levite who lived in Ephraim. (1 Chr 6:16, 22-28) He could be named after his home area and his lineage, hence a Ephrathite-Levite of the hill country of Ephraim. [Remember Moses was directed to establish cities thoughout Israel for the Levites to dwell in (Num 35:2).] Joseph called his second son, "Ephraim, 'For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.'" (Gen 41:52) This name's meaning seems to be 'double-fruitful.' The territory is called Ephrath (Gen 35:16; 48:7) where Rachel goes into labor, gives birth to Benjamin, and dies after child birth. Its meaning may be two-fold in referring to not only the place where Benjamin was born and Rachel was buried on the way to Ephrath (Bethlehem) but also the place where the new 'son,' gotten from God, would come.

And this son is longed for, prayed for, even coveted, "But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb. And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb. And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat." (1 Sam 1:5-7) In Hannah's vexation she turned to the Lord in prayer, "And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore. And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head." (1 Sam 1:10-11) When confronted by the High Priest Eli she said, "And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.." Then Eli answered and said, 'Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.' (1 Sam 1:15-17) Hannah's prayer is granted through Eli with him giving God's blessing. Hannah's longed for son, given to the Lord, is a man who will become a type of Christ, just as Rachel ultimately bore Joseph who became a type of Christ.

"Samuel himself was a picture of our Saviour. The meaning of his name was one of the perplexities of Hebrew scholarship till the year 1899, when the Twelfth Congress of Orientalists held its meeting at Rome, and Professor Jastrow, of Philadelphia, showed that, in the Assyrian, which is closely allied to the Hebrew tongue, the word sumu means son, and he translated "Samuel" as "son (or offspring) of God." Hannah, in the depth and sincerity of her surrender, gave up her first-born son to God utterly."

"He was "God's son" from the moment of his birth. "Therefore I have given him to the Lord" (not "lent" as in the A.V.). The word, common to the Babylonian and Hebrew tongues before their separation, becomes a witness to the antiquity of the book. It disappeared from the language of the Israelites so completely that no Jewish student of the Bible, ancient or modern, was able to explain it. But it is evident that it was in common use in Hannah's day; for she wanted every one to know that he was altogether the Lord's own, and she must have chosen a word, therefore, which every one could understand."

"The name "God's son" takes us a step further. The resemblance between Hannah's Song and that of Mary, the mother of Jesus, [is remarkable]. Mary's Song is not a repetition of Hannah's, yet both see the same vision. It is a vision of the earth's full salvation, and of the Lord's Christ. "The adversaries of the Lord," sings Hannah, "shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall He thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth; and He shall give strength unto His King, and exalt the horn of His anointed" — that is of His Messiah (1 Sam 2:10). "He hath showed strength with His arm," responds Mary: "He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts ... He hath holpen His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy; as He spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever." (Luke 1:51-55)"

During Samuel's period of service Saul was raised up as king and Samuel faded into the background for a season. With Saul's failure to obey God, Samuel is called upon to establish another king who will obey God. Samuel was contemporaneous with Samson. When Samson had died the Philistines came later in the same year, defeated Israel and captured the "ark of the covenant." When Eli the High Priest heard this news and of the deaths of his two sons he fell over and died at 98 years of age. Samuel continued to serve Israel until he was also aged. Samuel was very unique in that he served with Saul, Samson and David and after them came Solomon. God was making five distinct types of Christ in a short period of time, starting while Israel had forsaken the Lord. [Even Eli the High Priest's death when the Mosaic ark was taken points to Jesus' death when he, the real ark, was taken.] Samuel's heifer leads to Bethlehem and reveals David as the future king, while Christ the Lamb leads to Calvary and reveals salvation for all who will believe under a far greater king. Tabernacle worship faded, worship becomes centered around "son of God"
Ark captured by Philistines, With the Ark-less Tabernacle, all Tabernacle, Ark, sacrifices, priestly and Levitical functions are unmentioned during Samuel's ministry to focus people on God. The Ark, Tabernacle, Priesthood and the Sacrifices are types of Christ so that Samuel acted like a Savior-Priest but he still honored the Mosaic sacrificial system. (1 Sam 7:10; 11:15; 14:11-14); "And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here? And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place: As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him. And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place." (1 Sam 9:11-14)

So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither. Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw. And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force. Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord. ... Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the Lord's people to transgress." the Heavenly Ark: "Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness."
