Joshua Previews Christ

given a special name

The name 'Joshua' means the same as the name 'Jesus.' Joshua or Jehoshua means Jehovah is salvation (Hebrew S3091); Joshua, Jesus means saviour (Greek S2424) (Acts 7:45; Heb 4:8); "Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun. ... These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua." (Num 13:8, 16)

Great importance is given to the name of our Redeemer; for His name indicates His character, His work, and His glory. "But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." (Matt 1:20-23); "And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb." And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses." Joshua is a figure of Christ being "without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like unto the Son of God, abideth a priest continually." (Heb. 7:3) Christ came through an obscure Judean family and has no human descendents and like Joshua provided a new life for the people of Israel. "The Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; ... and thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient; (Num 27:17-23) Joshua was divinely or miraculously announced to Moses - Moses laid his hands on the head of Joshua, before his death.

Christ was called in ancient eternity, consecrated to his office in Jordan, and his divine and human qualifications were evident throughout his ministry. "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken." (Deut 18:15); "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me." (Isa 6:8); "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots." (Isa 11:1); etc. "Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows." (Psa 45:7; Heb 1:9); "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation. ... And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee." (Deut 31:14, 23); "And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses. Jesus, made of a woman, made under the law (Gal 4:4), was first the servant of the law, before he procured the salvation of men. He became the servant of the ceremonial law before he abolished it. As to the moral law — he obeyed its precepts, and he endured its penalty. He "fulfilled all righteousness." "And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him." (Matt 17:3; Mark 9:4; Luke 9:30); "And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them." (Luke 5:14); "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." (Luke 24:27); "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." (Phil. 2:6-8); "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." (Rom. 5:19); "For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted." If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not. But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel." And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." (John 14:2-3); "And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day." [Christ Jesus lays siege to the fortress of the human heart, made hard by unbelief and sin. He pleads for it to surrender; assails it with truth; and promises pardon, peace and life if it will open its gates. And then He will make them part of His own family. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho." (Josh 6:22-23, 25); "By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace." (Heb 11:31) [She was a harlot who lived in a wicked city under the condemnation of God without hope of escape, but she came to trust in the mercy of the God of Israel. (Josh 2:11); "That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world." accomplished God's promises to Israel

"As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses." (Josh 11:15); "Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward. And the Lord your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the Lord your God hath promised unto you. Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left" (Josh 23:4-6)

Christ has done the whole work of redemption for us; the gracious promises of God to His elect are fulfilled in and by the Lord Jesus. "I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do." (John 17:4); He performs God's promises — "And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform." (Rom 4:21); He subdues all things unto Himself — "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself." (Phil 3:21); He keeps that which we have committed to Him — " For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day." (2 Tim 1:12); He saves to the uttermost them that come to God by Him — " Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." (Heb 7:25); He keeps us from falling and presents us faultless before the presence of His glory — "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy." (Jude 24)

"And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day." (Josh 4:9); "And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land." "I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
